Birds cannot get to your boat!

Quite simply – BDSx00 creates a defensive mesh shield over your boat that birds cannot penetrate.

BDS100 Bird Deterrent System protecting a sailboat

When a bird attempts to land on your boat, its wings and legs will come in contact with the defensive shield and the bird will be repelled and fly away.

At the same time, the lightweight, flexible shield material and mounting system will not provide any solid surface for a bird to land on.

BDSx00 is Lightweight and Porous

The bird deterrent’s mesh shield technology is very lightweight and porous. This means it will not generate significant windage. Which is important while your boat is sitting on a mooring or at a dock.

High mesh shield porosity means that water will not collect in the deterrent’s shield, which would create a significant weight problem during rain storms.

Easy to Install, Remove, and Stow

BDSx00 comes with a water resistant nylon storage bag.

When you are leaving your boat on a mooring or dock, and you feel it will be attacked by birds, simply remove the BDSx00 deterrent shield system from the storage bag and install it on the boat. The integrated flexible mounting system allows you to install the BDSx00 in a matter of minutes. Nothing new needs to be permanently mounted on your boat. BDSx00 can be attached to the existing structures on your boat easily.

When it is time to go sailing, simply remove the BDSx00 deterrent system by reversing the installation process. Again it should only take a few minutes. Store it in the convenient nylon storage bag and stow it below deck.

It’s that simple!

There are many bird deterrent products for boats.

Over the years, solutions to protect your boat from birds have emerged.

Bird deterrent devices for boats

Boaters have tried them all – fake owls, fake snakes, electronic noise makers, strategically placed wires, and more.

But many don’t work at all. Some work but only for a limited region of your boat. Some work for some species of bird but not others. Some are complicated to install and require permanent modifications to your boat.

The idea behind BDSx00 is simple and easy to understand!

BDSx00 works because, quite simply, our patented mesh shield technology physically prevents birds from reaching your boat surfaces – deck, rails, bimini top, boom, console, etc. If the birds can’t get to your boat, they can’t roost on it!

Instead of crossing your fingers and hoping some other solution will ‘scare away’ a bird from your boat, use the BDSx00 and just block the birds altogether!

Birds have been a problem for recreational boaters since recreational boating began.

Very simply, a sailboat or powerboat makes a great place for birds to rest and ‘hang out’. Unfortunately, the birds leave behind an unseemly mix of feathers, excrement, food remnants, and bird vomit.

Bird droppings protected by bird deterrent system

But whose boat is it anyway?

You didn’t go to the trouble to purchase and maintain your boat so birds would have a place to hang out!

That sinking feeling of finding your boat covered with foul bird droppings

You have arrived at the boat with friends and family in tow, looking forward to a day on the water. But you find the boat covered in bird mess! Cleaning it off is hard work! Particularly when it is dried on hard by the sun over a period of days. Sometimes the stains are close to impossible to remove.

Instead of getting the boat ready to sail, you may have to spend hours cleaning. By that time, you are too exhausted to take the boat out on the water!

The BDSx00 bird deterrent system can solve the problem!

The bird mess is enough to make you want to sell your boat. But with our bird deterrent system, in a few minutes, you can re-claim your boat and your leisure time on the water.

Help us support US workers.

BDSx00 was developed and is being produced in the United States.

Bird deterrent system produced in the USA

While we could make a bigger profit by making BDSx00 off-shore, instead we want to ‘give back’ by supporting US workers. We feel very lucky to be living in the US and to have the time and resources to enjoy boating.

By making BDSx00 in the US, we hope to be helping other hard working people to succeed here. When you purchase our product you can take some comfort from knowing you are supporting US workers.

BDSx00 will protect the bulk of your boat…

However, on a sailboat it will not protect your spreaders and the very top of your mast.

We recommend you install ‘bird spikes’, on your spreaders and the top of your mast. Commercial bird spikes can be purchased from many sources including most boating supply vendors.

Bird deterrent spikes for sailboats

A ‘home remedy’ alternative that works is to install some plastic tie wraps on the spreaders with the long end pointing up and the end cut off at a sharp angle.

Another option is to tie some mono-filament line from your mast out to the tip of the spreader.

Bird Deterrents for Sailboats and Powerboats come in many varieties…

Each type of bird deterrent has pros and cons. Here we will provide a summary description of the basic types and the good and bad of each type.

birds attacking a boat

No Bird Deterrent

Pros:
Doing nothing to deter birds from attacking your boat has the benefit of completely avoiding the time and expense of deploying a preventative bird deterrent measure. If you do not seem to have a bird problem, this your best option!

Cons:
If you do have a problem with bird fouling on your boat, doing nothing about it means you will need to spend time, potentially a lot of time, cleaning up when you want to use your boat. If your boat or sailboat is particularly attractive to birds for one reason or another, you may have to spend multiple hours to clean each time you want to use your boat after leaving it on a mooring, at anchor, or on a slip. Plus cleaning up bird mess is not a fun thing to do, and can ultimately do permanent damage to the finish on your boat.

Bird ‘Spider’ Devices

A deterrent device commonly known as a bird ‘spider’ consists of wires radiating out from a central base. The wires are intended to move about with wind or waves rocking your boat. The motion of the wires is supposed to aggravate birds and make them fly away. In addition they will deter birds from landing on your powerboat or sailboat in the area that the wires are protruding.

Pros:
Relatively low expense. Likely will protect the area the deterrent is located in.

Cons:
Have to install and remove when using boat. Hard to anchor it in one spot; but special sand bag bases are available for this purpose, although in very high wind or wavy conditions may not be sufficient. The deterrent only works for the specific area it is installed in. Impractical to use this deterrent to protect all potential areas of boat where birds could roost, particularly on say, a 30 foot sailboat.

Mesh Covering

Using a mesh shield material to cover the boat surfaces.

Pros:
A mesh shield is guaranteed to deter birds from landing and prevent them from reaching your boat surfaces, so this method always works for the area it is covering.

Cons:
Normally impractical to cover entire boat. Can be very time consuming to install and remove. Until now! see How does BDSx00 bird deterrent work?

Fake Owl

Plastic fake owl, mounted somewhere on your boat where birds will presumably see it, such as attached to the mast of a sailboat.

Pros:
Low cost and simple to install on boat.

Cons:
Usually will not work to deter birds. Birds realize it is not live.

fake animals used as bird deterrents

Fake Snake

Pros:
Low cost and simple to install on boat.

Cons:
Usually will not work to deter all bird species. Birds realize it is not live.

Tin Plates, Bird scare tape

Reflective tin plates, or bird deterrent ‘scare’ tape that is reflective, attached on a line and hung around the boat in various places where birds may see it.

Pros:
Low cost, and may work for some species of birds.

Cons:
Hard to protect entire boat, time consuming to install and remove. May not work well on cloudy days or non-windy days. Does not deter all species of birds equally.

Bird ‘repeller’ or gull ‘sweep’ device

This deterrent consists of a rotating arm mounted on a vertical post which rotates in the wind and hits birds that come within the rotation area causing them to move or fly away.

Pros:
Low to Medium cost. Relatively easy to install and remove when boating, once the permanent part of the installation is complete.

Cons:
Will not work when there is no wind. Will only deter birds for the limited area it is covering. Impractical to use on sailboats due to various lines, extrusions, and required coverage area. Requires permanent mounting installation.

Monofilament Line

Monofilament or similar line can be mounted at select locations on the boat. For example, above a hand railing to deter birds from landing on the railing

Pros:
Low cost. Will work for selected area it covers
.
Cons:
Impractical and time consuming to cover entire boat. Requires permanent or semi-permanent mounting installation.

Bird Spikes

These are upward facing posts or nails mounted on horizontal surfaces that deter birds from landing on the horizontal surface. Improvised version includes wire ties or tie-wraps attached to spreaders with long end facing up.

Pros:
Bird spikes work well on sailboat spreaders. They are low cost and are installed once, before the boat is launched ( unless you have a crane or want to climb the mast after launch)

Cons:
Cannot be used for all areas of the boat, only useful on spreaders and top of mast. Cannot be used on railings, deck surface, etc.
